Developments in Mathematical Algorithms and Computational Tools for Proton CT and Particle Therapy Treatment Planning

We summarize recent results and ongoing activities in mathematical algorithms computer science methods related to proton computed tomography (pCT) intensity-modulated particle therapy (IMPT) treatment planning. Proton necessitates a high level of delivery accuracy exploit the selective targeting imparted by Bragg peak. For this purpose, pCT utilizes beam itself create images. The technique works sending low-intensity protons through patient measuring position, direction, energy loss each exiting proton. allows reconstruction volumetric distribution relative stopping power (RSP) tissues for use planning pretreatment range verification. have investigated new ways make both efficient accurate. Better RSP also enables more robust inverse approaches IMPT. IMPT, we developed framework performing intensity modulation pencil beams. expect that these developments will lead additional project work years come, which requires regular exchange between experts fields mathematics, science, medical physics. initiated such an organizing annual workshops on IMPT algorithm technology developments. This report is, admittedly, tilted toward our interdisciplinary methods. offer comprehensive overview results, problems, challenges with aim making other scientists wanting tackle issues strengthen their collaboration bringing together cutting-edge know-how from medicine, physics, mathematics bear physics problems at hand.
